Treatment Approaches Available to New Mesothelioma Patients
New approaches to the treatment of malignant mesothelioma inclusing immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy, new chemotherapy agents, and gene therapy.
New approaches to treat malignant mesothelioma are currently being tested. One the laser light is delivered to the cancer site, (in the case of mesothelioma, the pleura), through a fiberoptic device that allows the laser light to be manipulated and be directed directly onto the cancer cells, to be destroyed.
A new mesothelioma detection test is ready for distribution. This test uses microRNA markers to determine if a particular tumor is mesothelioma or another type of lung cancer. Mesothelioma often occurs in patients who have had long exposer to asbestos. Not only would doctors receive the test results faster, but also the improved accuracy for diseases such as mesothelioma would help a great deal with early detection of the disease.
